Why is the ER in the new bell commercials always a darker blue and in bold?
Q. I don't get it, all the words that end in ER on that commercial, the ER is always in blue and bold. I love the new bell commercial supporting the olympics and all, but is there a reason for the bold ER?

A. Hey, It's part of Bell's new ad campaign. "To tie the advertising even more closely to the concept of "better" and underline the range of product and benefits Bell offers, the English campaign also makes liberal use of words ending in "er" - faster, easier, music lover, gamer, worker, talker, texter, multitasker - which was also the basis of the company's recent advertising teaser campaign."

What do social workers ask if you're admitted to the ER for almost drinking yourself to death?
Q. I'm writing a novel, and I need to get my main character admitted to a psych ward. What kinds of questions would a social worker ask a patient who was brought to the ER almost comatose from alcohol poisoning?
Asked by Alison M - Fri Jun 5 17:58:07 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Not too many until the patient recovers, that's for sure. The types of questions I think would be asked would be fairly basic. Name, address, employment, family situation, income, any history of psychiatric treatment, who can be contacted on behalf of the patient, name of doctor who normally treats the patient, and then I would think the questions would be along the lines of why the patient has reached this stage of desperation, how long the severe drinking problem has been going on and what if any measures have been taken to address the problem, bearing in mind that most people don't consider they have a drinking problem even if they are at rock bottom.

Q. Don't know all the systems but doctor in the ER pronounced my ex husband with dying from septic shock. Or could it have been from an overdose from to many pills and booze.

A. Did the emergency Dr. do a gastric lavage or ordered a toxicology panel and there were no medications found would rule out an overdose. If he presented with a high fever with low bloodpressure and abnormal blood work that would indicate sepsis

Is it necessary to replace the serpentine tension-er when replacing the serpentine belt on a 1996 VW golf gti?
Q. I was wondering so I could get all the parts at once. Would it be safe to assume the tension-er for the timing belt should be replaced when replacing the timing belt as well?
Asked by secret p - Thu Feb 28 15:44:15 2008 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Timing belt: Yes, if the tensioner fails it will cause extensive engine damage Serpentine belt: No, it's easy to check and see if it's bad, and it won't break anything if it fails.

What radiography specialty would be best to learn to work in the ER?
Q. I am in radiography school right now and I want to work in the ER with trauma patients. Is there even a job like that (specifically in the ER, I mean)? If so, should I specialize in CT or MRI or what? Anyone have any idea?
Asked by azrielle - Wed May 16 12:58:12 2007 - - 3 Answers - 1 Comments

A. Plain x-ray techs and CT techs are the main ones we work with. Very occasionally we call in ultrasound, MRI never, and very rarely nuc med. If you're going for specialty, I'd suggest CT. CT brains and abd/pelvis are ordered all the time, at all hours. I don't think you can work purely in the ER, just in the radiology dept. The ER patients come to you.

What do I do? Should I go to ER and waste money or wait till tomorrow to see doctor?
Q. So the side of my head, all around my ear feels swollen and hurts. My eye is also swollen, I had a pimple there yesterday and popped it and it is now swollen all over eyelid. I have taken vicodin, ibuprofin, and I feel dizzy and sick to my stomach. I wonder if I should go to the er. I took the vicodin 10 hours ago though and it wasnt alot.
Asked by Ryan - Sat Dec 5 22:33:27 2009 - - 9 Answers - 2 Comments

A. Ok, first of all, this is NOT an ok situation for the use of Vicodin. I'm assuming you have it from a prescription gained from some other injury. Vicodin is a controlled narcotic and WAY too strong for swelling. No more Vicodin! ibuprofin is an anti-inflammatory, and should do the job adequately. Based on how quickly and how severely the swelling has set in, it's possible an infection has flared up. If you'd like to play it safe, you should probably just go to the ER and have them ensure it isn't something like MRSA (a nasty, potentially deadly staph infection). If you're willing to risk it, I recommend an ice pack over the swollen area to slow the spread of the infection.

How will I now if I need to go to the ER from a cat bite?
Q. My cat bit me bad yesterday after being outside all night on accident. I think she was really scared because she is never outside. She has bitten me before and I have had no problem, but this time it is bad and the two area where her fangs went in me are red and swollen. I really do not want to go to the ER. Any advice?

A. Cats have teeth. Cats have sharp teeth. A cat will bite when it's upset. A cat will bite hard when it's very upset. Cat bites hurt. Cat bites in your finger joints hurt a lot. All of these statements are true; I can attest to them personally. I won't bore you with all the details. Suffice to say that at a recent cat show one of my otherwise purring lovelies got loose. By the time I captured her, she was so disoriented, frightened/terrified that she bit me on both my hands. After four days in the hospital, I can tell you that cat bites can get infected quickly. This can happen, obviously, even if you do know what to do. Statistics show that 80 percent of all cat bites get infected. The most frequent type of bite is a puncture wound. If… [cont.]

What rights does a patient have when a ER doctors give them false information regarding his/her tests results?
Q. I work with a ER physician who is very evil and just doesn't seem to care about anything...he read an EKG result that was obviously abnormal and told the patient that everyhing was ok and that he didnt see any problems...later the on that day the patients family doctor read the EKG and saw very obvious problem..what type of rights does the patient have when a ER physician give them false information about their results?
Asked by blesnme - Wed Mar 18 21:12:39 2009 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Let's talk about rights. First. You have NO right to have knowledge of patients health records, so forget trying to do anything. Second. Did him giving her false reports cause any physical harm to her? Or put her in a situation where physical harm would be incurred? Third. Did he rectify his errors when he found out?

Can I deduct co-pay for ER visit if ER visit was last year, but paid this year?
Q. I had an ER visit last year and I paid the ER Visit co-pay early this year. Can I include that expense in my itemizations on my income tax return?

A. First - your total medical expenses must exceed 7.5% of your income (AGI) before you can deduct anything. If you paid with a credit card in 2007 you deduct in 2007. If you paid any other way in 2008 you claim in 2008.

A. If it's a pulsating mass it could be an Aortic Aneurysm. It requires an immediate abdominal ultrasound. Depending on the size of the mass, it may require immediate surgery or it may be left alone. You can read more about it here:

What procedure would be taken in a hospital ER if a child was found unconscious in a public place?
Q. This is for a creative writing class and I'm not familiar at all with hospitals or medical professionals. In one scene, a kid is taken into a hospital who was found unconscious in a public park. He turns out to be more or less immortal, having survived an explosion with no injuries--he's just unconscious. So let's just say he's found, an ambulance is called...what, realistically would happen from there, in the ER?
Asked by im_afraid_so - Wed Aug 27 17:16:47 2008 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. They would check breathing, pulse, perhaps blood sugar (diabetic coma), evaluate the level of unconsciousness: , do some brain scans if needed.

What do the circular color coded stickers mean that are used when visiting the ER?
Q. I recently visited the ER for the stomach flu and noticed that after the woman took my information she placed a yellow sticker on my form. I realize this sticker is used to determine the severity of the patient and helps them determine what order to call patients into the ER. What are all the different colors of stickers used and what do they mean?
Asked by Thad - Thu Feb 19 23:06:55 2009 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. It varies from hospital to hospital. As a rule there are three colors used for triage purposes- green, yellow and red. Green means that the problem is not life threatening and can wait pretty much indefinitely. Yellow means the problem is more serious, not a life threat, but can become more serious. Red obviously means something needs to be done now, or at least in the next few minutes to preserve life or limb. There are also other stickers used to tag patients with special needs or considerations- like allergies, mental illness, diabetes, drugs, etc. At our hospital, we use one of the three colors, plus a different color beneath that for special conditions alerts. Not everyone gets two stickers, and they can be in various… [cont.]

What do the rough ER and smooth ER transport?
Q. 1) What does the rough ER transport? I know that it has attached ribosomes. But, what does it transport? 2) What does the smooth ER transport? BTW this is 7th grade stuff not like college so you don't need to list all of the little things that no one knows about, just the main things that these each transport. Oh and please answer 1 and 2 separately so i know which transports what.
Asked by Midnight - Mon May 4 21:53:34 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. 1.) Rough ER doesn't really transport anything, at least as far as I remember. It's attached ribosomes are where translation takes place. This is the most significant function of the rough ER (ever notice how the rough ER is closest to the nucleus?) 2.) Smooth ER transports a lot of different things all over the cell. It's kind of the "everything else a cell does goes here" kind of thing. Some functions include: synthesis of lipids and steroids, metabolism of carbohydrates, regulation of calcium concentration, drug detoxification, attachment of receptors on cell membrane proteins, and steroid metabolism.

How do I become an ER Sribe in Atlanta or Houston?
Q. I want to become an ER scribe or a physician scribe in one of those cities. Do I just go to any hospital and ask? I know there are formal programs but there are only a few. I also only want to do it for one year not two.
Asked by sixplace - Mon Apr 7 17:21:55 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. ER scribe is basically being a transcriptionist only you are there one the spot. So you may need to have some transcription experience. You will definitely need to have training, best case is to find the place you want to work and ask them what they are looking for in someone to fill this position. It may or may not be worth the effort for only a couple of years, I would definitely look at the cost of training, time to train, and how much more you would make. (usually in ATL $10/hr) Important to also assess your goals, or why be an ER scribe, is cost worth the reward? Hope this helps.
