GNU Free Documentation License What food should I use for urinary problems for a male cat? Q. My cat Lionel is ten years old and still active. However he has had reoccurring urinary tract problems. I recently took him to the vet and they gave me a cat food (Prescription Diet C/D) which Lionel is supposed to eat for the rest of his life. (It has low magnesium). My problem is that the food is very expensive and I have to go to the vet everytime to get it. Is there another kind of dry cat food that is available? I heard that Nutro is a good brand. Also, I would like suggestions on any alternatives beside the dry food. I can ask my vet these questions but I would like to have a 2nd (and 3rd, 4th etc) opinions from Yahoo answers. Anyway my doctor also gave me c/d for him but she also said that since it is sooo expensive that I could give him purina urinary tract health for it and that would be ok. You're doing the right thing. I went through this myself, and it took me two weeks. First, be prepared to waste a bit of money. And to be patient. Buy several different brands of food, and get different varieties of each. Offer a bit of that, and if your cat responds to any, make note of the brand and flavor. It may be that he'll like venison or turkey, or perhaps he'll like any flavor from a certain manufacturer. You are right to switch gradually. I think you could continue what you're doing - offer the dry food once per day - give him 1/2 to 3/4 of what he would usually get. Q. I make wet cat food and stick to foods I know are fine for cats. Like Human Grade Turkey Liver, Chicken Liver, Chicken Thighs and Boneless Salmon, Peas and Carrots. What other foods would you suggest to put in there? I tried Sweet Potato and Butternut Squash and it worked as well:) I do feed dry food, they get homemade wet food because of the bad preservatives and fillers like corn and wheat.
