Q. My friend raised my cat and her kittens and they are 8 weeks old and when i took one of the kittens home and the mom i saw the kitten barely eat the wet food only the gravy in it and she drinks her moms milk. What should i do? Does KMR kitten forumla help wean a kitten?

A. Don't do anything. It's natural for the kittens to continue nursing as different cats ween their young at different times. Besides, the mother's milk is some of the most nutritious food the kittens can get.

Can I feed my 13 week old kitten cat food that is labeled for both cats and kittens?
Q. My 13 week old kitten won't eat kitten food. We've tried wet, moist and dry. The only few brands of cat food he will eat is labeled for cats and kittens. The fat content isn't as high as in the kitten food but I don't know how to get him to eat the kitten food. Is this ok since it is labeled for both cats and kittens?

A. If the first ingredient is meat or meat meal, and it doesn't contain any corn, by-products, soy, salt, or wheat gluten, then it should be okay for your kitten!! A great food would be Innova, Innova EVO, California Naturals, Premium Edge, or Chicken Soup for the soul. Not friskies, Iams, science diet, special kitty, purina, or most anything you see in the grocery store/ petsmart. One great kitten food to try is Maxximum from Wal Mart. It's cheaper than Innova, etc. but it is comparitively higher-quality.

What do you feed a kitten who is allergic to kitten formula?
Q. I have 2 abandoned kittens that I took in 2 days ago, vet estimated them to be between 4-6 weeks of age. They cannot manage the kitten food I was given but love the kitten formula. However, they are now having white stools, which I read are caused by formula intolerance. Unfortunately I can't find any info on what to feed as an alternative to kitten formula, and the vet is closed. Any guidance would be much appreciated. I'm not normally a cat person but these babies have won my heart, and they are a part of our family now.

A. If it is a good quality complete dried food, try mixing it into a gruel, using a little warm water. If they are over 4 weeks, this will be FINE and can be made thin enough to give through a bottle if need be. If they are weaned, and at that age they probably are, then they don't NEED milk of any description, and will absorb MUCH more goodness from a complete kitten food. Good on you ,it's hard work raising such little guys.=)

How do you get a kitten to use a litter box?
Q. I recently took in a 5-week-old kitten I found on the side of the road. I took her to the vet and was told she had a severe ear infection, but other than that she appeared okay. She's been receiving her antibiotics and is now running, jumping, eating solid food, drinking water, and maintaining a normal life like any kitten would. The only problem is that the kitten has not gone to the bathroom in over 48 hours. What can I do to help with this problem? I've heard of rubbing a warm towel on her rear until she goes to the bathroom, but will this work for a kitten of this age? Will she do it on her own if I get her introduced to the litter box? I'm worried that something may be wrong if she hasn't gone to the bathroom in so long, but she seems… [cont.]

A. She should be able to use a litter box by now. I do fosters where I work and they know what the box is for. If she hasn't gone in 3 or 4 days, give some cat lax or vegetable oil, mineral oil, or non spice pumpkin that has been canned. She most likely is adjusting to the food and environment, so she may not go for a few days.

How do I encourage my 4 week old kitten to eat real kitty food?
Q. My kitten will be 4 weeks old this Sunday. Her two siblings eat the kitten food very well by themselves; however, my kitty only wants mommy or the bottle. The problem with mommy is she doesn't want to feed them nearly as often as before. This is my first cat (from a kitten) and these are my first (and last) litter (3) of kittens. This particular kitten goes to her new home in just two weeks. She will use a litter box, but is not interested in solid food. Any advice?

A. You can try Gerber's baby meats in Chicken or Turkey. Also pick up a bag of Royal Canin Baby Cat hard food. It is really tiny pieces and they really seem to love this food. You can purchase this at Petsmart or Petco. Best of Luck

How can I help my new kitten get used to the kitten we already have?
Q. We have a 9 week old kitten, she's really playful and cuddly. We just got a n 11 week old today. Our little girl we named Ella, and we named the new kitten Max. Max has hissed at Ella and he Ella then back. Is this normal behavior for kittens just meeting eachother. I have never owned a cat before, I've always had dogs, so I was half expecting them to start playing right away. Will they become friends eventually, or I am better off giving Max back? I am planning on getting them both fixed, yes when they are old enough. Also, we have lots of family members who have cats, so we are not w/o advice, I was simply posting here to get some advice from others. Only positive comments please, I don't deal with negative people. Thanks so… [cont.]

A. KB ~~~ U definitely want the 7 week old kitten.. unless u are gonna let the 3 week old stay a little longer with its mom.. It needs to stay as long as possible to get the skills... and milk.. from its mom.. Ur kitty.. will know when it is hungry... or it will let u no when it is hungry... the easiest way.. is to leave its food out.. with its water and or milk... just put the food in the crate.. so the other animals can not get to it during the day.. but ur new kitty..( belle or blondie) will be able to go in.. I am getting excited about u getting a new kitty as well... I am very happy for u..Us Texans gotta stick together, also if ur in doubt then whatever food u decide on.. read on the package.. it varies.. good luck.. my friend

How important is it for kittens to eat kitten food?
Q. I have a 3 month old kitten and an 11 year old cat. Both of them like to eat little and often so their feeding bowls are always out. They both enjoy dry biscuits and recently I've noticed that the kitten will push the big cat out of her way so she can get to his food, he then just wanders over to her food. Is it important that she's eating the right sort of food for her age? She really seems to prefer adult cat food.

I've given ALL my adult cats baths, sometimes at the same time! And i've NEVER had this problem .. but i'm sure it comes up, like you said. Chalk this up as a tiny mistake .. and make sure you keep them seperated until they dry off .. in a bedroom or something. Good luck

How does an indoor kitten get fleas?
Q. We have a flea infestation in our house, which really sucks. But here's the thing, we know it came from the kitten. Things were fine at first but now it's a problem. So how the hell does a kitten get fleas when she never ventures outside? We didn't have this problem before and I believe the Animal Shelter put flea medicine on them before you adopting them right? A. Bathe the kitten in Ivory liquid dish soap and warm water and rinse well. You may need to wash him twice to get rid of all of the fleas. Use flea bombs or getting an exterminator is best and get a guarentee or ask if they come back to spray the new hatched eggs in a couple of weeks. Have him spray the yard well where your family walks and plays. It will also get rid of tics and they are bad this year.Shampoo all of your carpets, uphostered funiture (at least vac it) and wash all bedding, pillows, accent pillows, etc. Bathe the kitty again adnd dry him and love him. You are bonding and the kitten is learning that you are master. Hold her by the scruff if she squirms or trys to scratch or bite. Say no in a firm voice when she trys anything and… [cont.]

A. I have a 10 month old Persian and he is about 9 pounds now. Persians will vary in size and depending on the breeder some simply have larger cats in their breeding program. By age 2 your Persian should reach it's biggest size. I'm not sure how much they grow per month. My Persian averaged about 1.5 pounds per month so far.

How old does a kitten have to be before it's safe for him to begin using clumping litter?
Q. I adopted an orphaned kitten at 3 weeks old. He is now 5 weeks old. I understand that clumping litter is not healthy for baby kittens so I've been providing him a small litter box filled with traditional clay litter. When can I let him use the litter box with the "grown ups"?
Asked by Shannon K - Sun May 14 16:58:01 2006 - - 7 Answers - 0 Comments

A. As soon as he is readily using the litter tray, and no longer trying to put any of the litter in his mouth. This is the main reason clay litters, especially clumping litters, aren't healthy for kittens; because they eat the litter, and it clumps in their stomach, besides the fact that it cant be digested. When he uses the litter tray each and every time (which, he may be getting pretty good at it by this age, though it may be better to wait a little longer; that's up to the individual kitten; some kittens can take up to 8 to 12 weeks to properly use the litter box,), then you can gradually mix clumping litter in with his current litter; each time you change the litter, give him less of the original litter and more of the clumping litter. When should I start feeding my kitten regular cat food as opposed to kitten food?
Q. I adopted my kitten in October, he was three months then. He is now roughly seven months. I have been feeding him kitten chow, but I am wondering when should I change to regular cat chow? Thanks. Extra: Is it safe to feed him a little bit of milk every now and then?
Asked by Chris - Thu Feb 11 23:25:25 2010 - - 7 Answers - 0 Comments

A. I am a first time cat owner and plan to switch from kitten chow to cat chow when "he" is about 1 year old. Most cats are lactose intolerant and milk can upset their tummy and induce vomiting, the most common symptom in cats is diarrhea, usually within 8-12 hrs. However "some" cats can tolerate milk just fine, try giving your cat a tablespoon or two, if you don't see symptoms in 24hrs, chances are good that your feline is not lactose intolerant. An "occasional" treat should be ok. Vets do not recommend it, cats don't need milk, and the potential problems outweigh the potential benefits. Also see "Harmful Foods Your Cat Should Never Eat" at the web site listed below.

How many shots does a new kitten need and how much do they cost?
Q. I have a 2 month old kitten which I haven't vaccinated. But now that I have the money I would like to take it. I would like to be as prepared as possible before going to the vet. I don't want the vet telling me the kitten needs shots that it actually doesn't need. Please tell me which vaccinations it needs and the approximate cost of each shot. She's an indoor kitten and seems pretty healthy. I would appreciate your response. Thank you.
Asked by genie18005 - Mon Sep 24 20:51:22 2007 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Well, the first year of shots can set you back around $150-200, depending on what you get vaccination-wise, and it also depends on the individual vet's fees (some are expensive, some are not). The first thing the kitten will need is a check-up where they usually get their first series of shots, usually a DRCC/FVRCP vaccination, which covers feline distemper, rhinotracheitis, calicivirus, and chlamydia. I haven't had a kitten in a while(all my cats were adults when I adopted them), but I believe they usually need to come back in a few weeks for their Rabies vaccination(which will probably be only a 1yr vaccination, then once the kitten gets its next one it will probably recieve a three year one), but they may now give them all at the same… [cont.]

What do you look for when choosing a kitten?
Q. I will be visiting my local shelter/humane society next week to look for a kitten and want one that is very well socialized and friendly. Eight years ago I got a sweet kitten from the pound (I still have him and he's neutered), but he tends to be the nervous type and is a little shy and withdrawn. He is really only comfortable around me. What are things to look for when judging a kitten for temperament? What kinds of "tests" can I do while looking the kittens over? I know what to look for as far as health goes. Thanks!
Asked by Knight of Malta - Thu Jun 21 11:40:26 2007 - - 13 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Here's what helped me to choose the cats I have now: 1. Ask the staff to tell you about the kitten's history. It's best to find kittens that were with their mother for a sufficient amount of time. Ask what environment the kittens were in before arriving at the shelter. Kittens raised in a place with people nearby, and typical "family" noises, will be more socialized and relaxed. Also, ask if the kittens were handled regularly in their early weeks. You don't want a kitten that was "hand reared" by humans (i.e. without its mother). 2. Pick a kitten from a litter. Watch how the kittens interact with each other. A kitten should be playful, but not too aggressive. Avoid kittens who hide in the corner or appear to bully their siblings. 3. A… [cont.]
