When the Federal Reserve sells Treasuries, does it actually increase money in circulation?
Q. I know when the Federal Reserve sells Treasuries, their primary objective is to reduce the money in circulation because people are buying bonds, and the Fed takes their money out of circulation. But technically speaking, isn't that only temporary? Aren't they actually expanding the money supply in the long run, when the Federal Reserve has to pay up on the bonds, plus interest? Or does inflation cancel that out? But still, i don't think inflation would be higher than interest rates.

No. If the Fed does nothing more, that money is gone. - Aren't they actually expanding the money supply in the long run, when the Federal Reserve has to pay up on the bonds, plus interest? No, because the Federal Reserve does not pay up on the bonds. They did not issue them The Treasury issued them and redeems the bonds plus interest. The only reason the Fed had them was because they had purchased them previously from the public (which increased the money supply). Hope that helps. Feel free to ask follow-up questions
